I agree we have American citizens in need who have been paying into social security and unemployment for years and they only get benefits for a few months. You want us to help the people that have never given this country a cent but instead send it back to Mexico, I don't think so. If you think it's too hard here leave the way you came and Obama better not try to give away our hard earned benefits to illegals! Have you researched how many illegals have a criminal history in Mexico? Did you research how many  families each year lose a loved one when an illegal hurts someone in a vehicle that he shouldn't been driving in the first place?

Regarding the Native Americans, do your research because there are plenty of instances where Innocent Peace loving settlers came to this country to escape the harsh conditions in Europe and struggle to farm a small plot only to find the Indians that they invited into their home would return at night to steal all their livestock, murder the whole family and set the home on fire. Are they not also "Atrocities"?  

I absolutely feel sorry for people who are struggling and out of work, however; I cannot say I feel sorry for anyone who is here illegally and is unable to get government assistance. Again "illegal" means you are breaking the law. I am an immigrant who came to this country legally and who was sponsored by the church. Listen, I'll be the first one to say that the naturalization program here is probably antiquated and in bad need of updating...it's a government run thing so the assumption is justified...I get that.

I'll also be the first one to say that if they are trying to become naturalized (meaning they have filled out the paperwork, have their "Green Card" and are going through the process) then as an American, we should lend a hand and help a brother out.

There are so many forces at play in these type of issues, may of which have little to do with illegal immigration itself. Academics call them "push and pull" factors. You said it, our government sold us out! They preyed on people who could barely speak english, let alone understand a mortgage agreement. The mortgage lenders didn't even have the audacity to ask for proper documents. The fact is, it was people of color and the working poor who, indeed, were powerfully affected by the forclosure crisis because it was a ticking time bomb waiting to happen.

However, the bomb was jusn't set among the poor. The middle class also paid the price: here in my neighborhood, families couldn no longer afford to pay their $5000(!!!) mortgage once a well-paying job was lost.

There is a misconception here that this is a Democrat vs. Republican issue. It is NOT. Both McCain and Obama were in favor of amnesty for illegal immigrants. This has reached a point where the American citizen has no one on their side in the halls of power. No matter who won that election, or the next one, our leaders are intent on trying to appease Latino citizens, newly the largest minority in this country, and how they do so is by being soft on illegal immigration. This ship has sailed. Back in 1990 was the time to prevent this from happening. There are simply too many Latinos here at this point for any major party to risk alienating them.

I don't know what is to become of us, but trying to paint this as an Obama problem is just hiding the true nature of the problem and making us less effective in solving it. The question is, how do we take back our nation from the two parties who are more concerned with shoring up their own power than in benefiting the American middle class citizen?

Our jobs are being sent overseas in droves. The more technology advances, the greater range of jobs can be done overseas for $2 an hour. It is already getting where you can't get the entry level experience you need to advance because all the entry level jobs are done overseas. Soon there really will be no recovering from this, as the knowledge will only be present in India.

Similarly, here in America for jobs that have got to be done in-person, illegal migrants are chosen ahead of Americans because they work for very little and live in sub-standard living situations like the ones described in this article. As they say in the article, even such poor living with 12 in one house is still way better than in Mexico. So when does it stop? When Americans have to also get used to living 12 in a house, that's when.

Unless, and big unless here, because I don't expect anything to stop it... I expect us to go the way Italy has already gone before us, another once great nation that squandered its greatness by not protecting it... unless something is done to put a bottom line in place that applies to all wages paid by American companies. Whether you hire someone in India or America, pay the same wage. Whether you hire a Mexican to farm or an American, pay the same minimum wage as set by federal law. Have massive penalities (at least $100,000 per illegal) anytime a company is found to have violated this law.

And YOU, and I mean anyone reading these words, you stop being a part of the problem TOO. You stop shopping at Wal-Mart. Stop buying those cheap products covered in toxic paint that will break in 6 months just so you can save $2. Buy the American product that is safe and of quality, and do it before that American company goes under and you no longer have that choice.

I cant feel bad for people that are hear illegally. If you want to live the "American Dream" then fill out an application and go through the process like everyone else. Im supossed to feel bad that these criminals dont get unemployment? they stole someone identity to get the job in the first place. you say im cold hearted all you want but you know what? I just became a U.S. citizen on Jan. 16 of this year. I'm from Canada. I had to go through all the hoops put in front of me to be a legal alien, and then the even more difficult process of becoming a citizen, and have no sympathy for these "pot-lickers". On Sept 11 2008 my entire company threw a party for a legal, green card holding young lady who gained her american citizenship.

On Sept 12 2008 we discovered an illegal immigrant who used forged social security information to get a job. Our new citizen was the one to call ICE to have him deported.

We found out because a lady called who was in trouble with the IRS. It seems that her two year old failed to file a tax return on wages earned at our company. (She had reported his social security number for earned income credit). As a result her refund was held up until this was resolved.

We deal with a many contractors that use illegal immigrants. Our former employee was stupid, rather than pay taxes for a two year old, he could have gotten a job that paid cash, under the table, with no taxes reported. It is a huge savings for employers.

When I did write up work for my CPA hours I did payroll for a couple of companies. I was constantly amazed at how many people had the same address. There were at least 76 people at my last count (2003).

To let everyone know - yesterday I sent the link to this posting to President Obama. I told him that about 1 person out of 100 agreed for amnesty for illegals.

Okay, for those who don't really know or have knowledge about these things, let me slowly explain so that you can understand....

Without a social security number or tax identification number, workers of any flavor DO NOT PAY TAXES. The only way an illegal immigrant can pay taxes is by providing a stolen or made up social security number. The employers should be looking every single ss# up before the prospective employee is hired.

Okay, so say the illegal immigrant provides a fake SS#, true, taxes do come out of the pay check. VERY TRUE. However, the illegal immigrant is breaking the law by claiming an extraordinary amount of tax deductions, so he/she may not pay any FICA taxes, but SS and medicare taxes are still taken out. TAX deductions can't reduce the amount of SS or medicare taxes on the pay check.

SO, now we come to the end of the year. The government says, "if you want to become legal, then you must file your taxes for so many years. We want you to show that you are willing to be American and pay your fair share of taxes." BULLF()KING CH!T. Why do I curse like this?? Because those spineless pieces of dogdung in congress passes a bill that gave illegal immigrants a way of recovering every penny they paid in SS and Medicare taxes.

The illegal immigrants file for a International Taxpayer Identification Number. They then file their tax returns and while they can NOT claim the EIC, they can claim the Child Tax Credit...this gives them all of the FICA dollars they paid in from their paychecks. They can also claim the Additional Child Tax Credit. This refunds all of the money that was paid into SS and medicare based on the number of children they have. WELL, congress also put a provision in the bill that would allow them to claim their brothers and sisters and nieces and nephews and the neighbors' children.

So, they in fact are not paying any taxes into any system. Now, a person might think, well, if they can't access the SS or Medicare systems, it is only right to return their money. HOW wrong could you be???? They are here illegally, they should not be paying into any system because they should not be having a job!!!!!!!!

ALSO, what about the part, "If you want to be American citizens, you need to pay your taxes like American Citizens." Well, as illegal as they may be, the illegal immigrant has found a way to snub his/her nose at the American citizen."

These people come here any way they can because starvation and oppression basically suck. They come here because they can do menial labor for cheap, live like rats with many families together to avoid starvation and oppression. Many people and businesses in this country hire these people because they work long back breaking hours for low wages, no overtime, no time and a half, poor housing and no complaining. Americans will do this work, but not for nothing and not for long hours with no benefits. We spent decades getting rid of that type of oppression that goes along with capitalism. I bet that the kids of these illegals from Mexico have generally already moved on to higher status employment. You cannot perpetuate a strong family system by working yourself to death. These parents know this, and their sacrifices are all for their kids. These people will not live long lives doing these crap jobs; no one does. The Mexican issue is strictly a geographical one. These people can walk here, all the way from Panama and South America if they want to. We didn't get illegals from Europe or Asia in the old days- too far to swim. The fundemental problem is that the American and Mexican governments will not take responsibility for what is going on, and the American taxpayer and citizen is paying a very heavy price for it as we all know. Mexico is a disaster area economically and politically unless you are very wealthy. The corruption has broken down society in many ways and you can't blame people for not wanting to starve- the Mexican government will not feed their own people, or create jobs or opportunities for their regular citizens, so as a last resort they come here, work and send their money home. Our government is not doing enough to stem the tide of border crossings and illegal employment. A lot of these businesses are taking advantage of these people, so that is not helping. Greed is major factor in all of this. These people will not leave this country. We need to stem immigration and assert assimilation of those that are already here. This country cannot absorb all of the exiles of the entire world. Spreading democracy, although painful and difficult and costly, is the only way to preserve our country and culture. If life is too hard in other places, people will try to get here, and we do not have enough room or jobs for all of them.

All the added illegals in my county forced the population of elementary aged children up to the point we had to build more schools and print everything in two languages. Teachers can't teach their students because they have to teach these kids to speak English even though most of them were born here. Teachers have no money for paper because every other piece is reprinted in Spanish. Our district GAVE AWAY over $50k in FREE LUNCHES completely outside of the Federal Free Lunch Program in three months to kids who came to school with no lunch and no money and whose parents did not enroll them because they did not want to get snagged by filing the paperwork. I go to court for a traffic ticket and there are TWO translators being paid for by my tax dollar so the judge can hear all the undocumented workers state their lack of a case for mercy- the judge is pissed but says you know, this is not an immigration court, I'm just here to get the victim's money... so we start cracking down on illegals here and now we lose all the money the Federal Government (Read- your TAX dollars) affords to the schools per student, and teachers lose jobs. Administrators lose jobs. County staff cut by nearly 35% and you say "to some degree". I can't get in the ER in town because it's FILLED with Mexicans with the sniffles who have no health care because they have no job that's legal and even the Free Clinic is overflowing. It's not to some degree it's RAMPANT. It's parasitic. Wake up! Take your sympathy, stuff it in an envelope along with yourself and mail it to Guadalajara.

Here is a question, why is it ICE is not snatching this family and deporting them as we speak? I mean the guys picture is right there. I agree - we do have laws in place and organizations that are suppose to enforce them, but yet those considered illegal that know their illegal put themselves out there in hopes that someone will show them mercy (which often happens) while the government does nothing to enforce the law. It seems that these agencies don't want the bad press that comes with deporting known offenders of the law.

I personally don't understand how someone in the country illegally would dare put themselves out there as victims and in some cases use their children to further their agenda. I think maybe it's because they know that nothing will happen as a result. If your in a country illegally your not supposed to advertise it. This wouldn't happen in most other countries as one person noted because it would mean immediate deportation.

The politician's and officials that intentionally tampered with the enforcement of our laws committed treason and should be punished accordingly!

Who is hiring these people to work here? Other Mexicans or Americans? Are they all working or are they here being bums? If they are illegal, they cannot be getting welfare, can they? Or are their kids getting it by being born here? Somebody is providing serious incentive for these people to come here, and they don't seem to be starving, although having 12 families in one room can save a lot of money, but are they animals or what? Is life in Mexico bad enough where people come here for lousy low paying jobs to live on top of each each in squalor? Geez, I don't really get it. There are farms around here that hire these people. Some may be legal, others maybe not- don't know. The work is not that bad, picking apples, berries, dairy farms and so forth. When I was a kid, African-Americans from the deep south would come up in the late summer for crops and they were called migrant workers. The were paid but they paid taxes like everyone else and worked hard too. They would move around the country following the crop harvests, and in the winter would work in Florida. It's all Mexican people now, because that lifestyle fell out of favor because the kids could not get a solid education and being a migrant was hard. If the jobs are here to be filled, these people will continue to enter the country to get money. Ironically, you very rarely hear about these people commiting crimes- a lot of them are honest, hard working people, but I don't know the complete reality of the situation. They are also being given opportunities to do more skilled trade labor like roofing and carpentry, but they are doing it for low wages, but the costs to the consumer are still high, so someone is making out like a bandit. We all need to be aware that capitalism and labor exploitation go hand in hand, so we may all be playing a role in this issue whether we like it or not.

I agree; our children and relatives from families of many generations of tax paying citizens whoare not breaking the law by being here, are suffering substantially in our schools and the work force because of illegal aliens. In our country an unbelievable amount of money is spent educating and feeding illegals, at the expense of the quality of our children's education, and ultimately the fate of our children. Infrastructure also suffers. Much of the money made by illegals is sent back to their home country. It would be great to hold out our hand and give, if it was not at the detriment of our citizens and children.

The illegal immigrants take jobs and lower the wages

Illegals have lowered wages in my area. We are back to working for what we was making decades ago. It will be decades before the wages are back before they were lowered.Now the legal residents are glad to just have a job to feed their families.

Taking this country down to third world status on per hour wages lost.

There is a Corporate farm in this area that hires Illegals every harvest season to do the work" that no americans want to do" like drive the combines and such. This season they will lose their whole harvest to ecoli. I hope it bankrupts the corporation so a family can buy part of the land and start a family farm again. Exactly. They do get many government benefits even though they are illegal. Their children are educated for free with free access to English as a Second language teachers. Schools also provide this service in the evenings to these ppl. Doubt that there is a cost for this program. These services are paid for with our property taxes. They also receive FREE or reduced lunches, breakfast. Free or reduced before and after school programs. Then there is WIC food programs for the kids, which I am sure is used by the entire family -it is all they have. Free medical by using the ER as a doctor's office. The list goes on and on. Wake up ppl! Your taxes pay for all of these FREEBIES for the illegals. Your taxes go up because these services have to be paid for by someone - thank you U.S. tax payer! They come here like locust and ravage a city by using up all of its free services and then move on when it no longer benefits them. We (US citizens) should be the ones protesting in the streets about sending these ppl home. Maybe our government will get a clue and realize we don't want them here or want them made legal with a snap of Congress' fingers!

It's not just in the southwest and Texas. In parts of northern Virginia there are more of them than us. Every time my kids come home with a memo or any other paper from school it's in Spanish as well as English. Since when have we added Spanish as an official language? And in my job in the service industry, I'd be RICH if I had a dime for every time a Mexican or Latin American person assumed I spoke Spanish and started talking to me in Spanish without even asking if I speak it, and then acting shocked that I don't understand them. So much arrogance. So little respect.

I would add the legality of simply removing illegal residents who now have ties here, with siblings, parents, or children that are U.S. citizens is not a viable option, nor a cheap one. Immigration court systems already suffering a backlog of cases would be wasting more money on postponed deportation hearings through waivers, cancellations of removal or simple suspensions of deportation.

To be a citizen of this great Country is considered to be a real privilege. So much so that people migrate to the United States in large numbers every year to gain freedom and build their futures. So why don’t the majority of the immigrants file to be a citizen of the United States legally? Is it due to government red tape that holds them back or is it simply lack of encouragement because they gain those things they are seeking, such as freedom, making a living, or receiving excellent medical treatment, without the need to be a legal citizen of the United States?

The big question on the table today is what kind of medical industry changes need to take place to reduce medical costs and give all Americans the ability to afford medical insurance? Giving all Americans the ability to afford medical insurance sounds great but sounds a lot like giving every American the ability to buy a house (we all know where that led us). There have been many suggestions; however, our government feels they need to control the medical industry basically changing it to mimic that of Canada, France, or even the UK. All of which are warning us not to take the route of socialized medicine as they have. Citizens of these Countries are worried about losing the ability to continue receiving medical treatment in the United States since their own socialized medical industry is not working for them. These are good paying customers that pay for their medical treatment because it will save their lives, unlike that of the socialized systems they have in place in their Countries that limit life saving procedures and much needed medicine based on factors like age. Certainly, if our government takes the route of socialized medicine, these good paying customers will no longer be able to get treatment here in the United States causing a drop in revenue for our medical industry. Not to mention, citizens of the United States will no longer get prompt, state of the art, medical treatment. You’re probably wondering where I’m going with this regarding immigration and our medical industry. Bare with me, I will get to that shortly.

First, let’s revisit illegal immigration and look at the rights of our citizens as compared to illegal immigrants.

• Both are given rights by our government as outlined by our Bill of Rights (short of voting). Our government even wants to give terrorists these rights and close Gitmo!
• Both can get a driver’s license in most states.
• Both can purchase a house in America.
• Both can hold a job in America.
• Both can go to public schools. In fact, our educational system has been changing to accommodate Spanish speaking children who don’t know English.
• Both have freedoms like freedom of speech that are difficult to find anywhere else in the World.

Now, the differences:

• Illegal immigrants don't pay state or federal income taxes. American citizens do.
• Illegal immigrants don't have medical insurance. Most American citizens do and pay the way for these immigrants.
• Illegal immigrants send their money back to their own Countries; Americans keep their hard earned money here, in our own economy.
• United States citizens can vote, illegal immigrants can’t (or can they?)

This leads me to a startling conclusion. Illegal immigrants have more to gain being in the United States then our own citizens do. What’s the solution? Simply drop your citizenship to the US! This will make you an illegal immigrant giving you FREE medical care without the need for medical insurance. You would be able to still vote too! Just register with ACORN next election and you’re good as gold if they are still around! You are worried about losing your Social Security benefits? Don’t be because it won’t be there when you retire even though you paid into it your whole life.

Apply for citizenship with another Country of your choosing. Take the money you would have paid in taxes and medical insurance and buy property there. Rent the property and live in the United States as an illegal immigrant. When things go south in the United States, then you can go south too! If things improve in the United States, then reapply for citizenship. You can have dual citizenship!

So, what benefits do us American citizens have that would encourage legal immigration? Really, what are they? The citizen’s right to vote?

The right to vote; Most Americans don’t exercise this right. Illegal immigrants should not be able to vote as per our laws. Do illegal immigrants care about voting? Why should they? Voting is the only thing you will be giving up by becoming an illegal immigrant. So, give up voting, since most of you don’t vote anyways, and gain financially while having the best medical treatment in the world free.

I know this whole idea sounds stupid. But, I have to admit. The more I think about this, as silly as it sounds, the more it makes sense and it shouldn’t. This is why we need to make significant changes regarding our immigration policies and enforcement at our borders. Not to mention, it would be nice to know it would be difficult for terrorists to gain entry into our Country. By simply changing these policies, we will improve parts of our medical system. Once those things that impact our medical system are fixed, enforce the laws that are intended to prevent useless malpractice suits reducing insurance costs our doctors have to pay which then gets passed on to us for their services. Reduce medical costs will in turn reduce medical insurance costs. Reduce medical insurance costs, and then more can afford it.

Do you see what our government is doing? They don’t want to fix immigration or other topics that impact our medical costs. Especially if it means it impacts their ability to gain those much desired votes to secure their own re-election. They want to throw out the old and create a new medical industry that they can control. It is all about money, power, and greed. Not the American citizen. Our medical industry is not broken; our government is and is causing problems in our medical industry and much, much more!

Simply drop your citizenship to the US!

Have you ever tried this. there was a US citizen in Germany that wanted to give up his citzenship and was denied due to taxation reasons. He even went as far as going to the US ambassy and burning his passport, They just isued him a new one. You cannot just drop the American citizenship. You also just cannot claim citizenship in another country. Many of these countries require a corporate sponser just to enter. Many have strict regulations about citizenship. The netherlands states that if you drop you citizenship of you native country you cannot apply for citizenship in the Netherlands. Many countries will not accept you application for citizenship simply because you are already a citizen of the USA (which in turn you cannot get rid of even if you want to) So the preceding post is an argument of fantasy only with no facts (or research performed). Good luck dropping your US citizenship!

Other than these facts i do like the idea! I am thinking about taking my right not to file taxes for three years and then pay back taxes. I wonder what would happen if all of the legal US citizens did this for two years. No income in DC! What would they do!? and then we can all pay our back taxes just as Obama is leaving office!!!!!

I agree with you. The employers are mainly to blame that we have this problem with the "illegals" Has anyone read the job ads in the paper where most of the office jobs state "bi-lingual a must". My son is an electrician, he was the ONLY english speaking worker on the job site, he lost his job, the illegals are still working. They work for a couple of bucks less.

Again, I blame our politicians and the employers in this country. Their greed got us into this fix!!

The whole illegal immigrant issue is a convenient cover for racism and scapegoating during these trying economic times. Many of you keep trying to focus on the word "illegal" and blow it out of proportion to propagate fear and hatred against Latin Americans, and practically anoyone who speaks Spanish. I can guarantee that not a single person on this board has had their employer fire them, and replace them with an undocumented worker. If you have a real job, this doesn't happen.

I also seriously doubt that any of you right-wingers could name even two "free services" that illegal immigrants use up, particularly any free service that legal citizens don't get to use also. It's easy and feels good to say that "they are stealing our jobs, and they are ruining our country", but it's much harder to prove in reality.

My favorite, and most ignorant of arguments made by racist xenophobes is that Americans should only buy "Made In America" consumer goods, or boycott companies that outsource jobs. They do so without knowing anything about simple economics. If a product is made locally, by US workers, the workers will eventually request better pay and working conditions from their employer. Americans want their vacations and sick leave, and top notch healthcare benefits. This all cost the employer money. The employer passes on this cost to the consumer in the form of higher prices for their product. The cheaper it is for the company to operate and produce their product, the cheaper price they can offer to the consumer. Buying American will mean paying $5 or more for a carton of orange juice. Children's toys made in America will not be found on the shelves at Walmart, but the real high end stores you can't afford, like FAO Schwartz. Outsourcing works much the same way. The unfortunate side effect is that you'll be talking to someone named "Roy" with a thick Indian accent. Terrere had a point, "illegals" subsidize most of our decadent, American way of life. I was reading an article which said that illegals pay more in taxes then they take in services. Next the article "proved" this point by stating how much all immigrants (including legal immigrants) paid in taxes which was substantial. Problem is that the article did not say how much illegals paid in relation to their cost. No one here is saying anything about legal immigrants. This discussion is about illegals who I am sure cost much more than they pay in taxes. Lets see here are some things they do get without paying their fair share for them

1. Schooling

2. Medical care

3. Driving without insurance with no ability to pay for any accident they may cause.

4. Prison time when they commit a crime. (Do not forget that we probably had to provide thenm with their lawyer for any trial they may have had)

5. Crime prevention.

6. Free advocacy in terms of legal help, ACLU efforts

7. Enjoying our public parks and recreation facilities without paying their fair share of taxes.

8. Clogging up the roads (well this may be OK because at least they do buy gas and pay the gas tax when doing so). I imagine that the LA freeways would be fairly empty if all illegals left this country. Also, why should an illegal person pollute my air by driving?

9. Costing an arm and a leg in border enforcement and INS efforts.

10. Errosion of the historical love of people living here for this country.

11. Taking food from the food closets which is needed for citizens and legal aliens.

12. Causing all of us who are legal to have to pay higher taxes so they can live off of us.

I named 12 items and did not break a sweat in coming up with them. Each of these items cost legal Americans millions if not billions of dollars a year.

Illegal aliens are illegal. Personally, I have never met an illegal alien I did not like, but that is another issue. They need to leave.

Car insurance is not paid by tax dollars, people complain that Illegal Immigrants don't have car insurance but they pass laws where they cannot get Driver's license, which is needed to purchase Insurance.

If they pay taxes then they pay their fair share to enjoy public parks and recreation facilities.

If they own a car then they had to purchase it with their money and had to pay the property taxes on it, not just gas tax.
