Absolutely will be making the switch from XP to Win 7. Building a new system to run the beta until the final release. Very impressed with Win 7. No interest in Vista, another Microsoft Windows ME!

Vista wasn't as bad as ME, but it wasn't as good a Win 7 either.

      Under-whelmed

Vista was and to this day continues to be an abortion!!!!

I have been looking at Windows 7 and I must say that I think Microsoft might have gotten this one right. I hope so because I don't believe that they would ever recover from having two Vista-like disasters back to back.

Yes, will make the switch. Been running Build 7000 for three months with no problems. Better than Vista for standard corporate users in my opinion.

Most definitely. Already running Build 7000 and it's worked like a charm. Except for the DRM, but I think that's a necessary evil at this point in time.

              DRM = Digital Rights Management.

Its purported purpose is to make copying content from CDs and DVDs impossible. All it does it punish legal buyers of software.

But that's a different rant of mine. :-)

I'm not going to do it yet. The next upgrade for me will be the processor chip in my present unit, which is using XP with Service Patch 3. I can go up to a quad-core CPU, and when I do that, I should be fine for several more years.

Been trying to run Win 7 in a VMWare VM on Windows Vista 64 Bit. Runs ok but with quirks, but the quirks are in the VMWare, not Win7.

Not gonna do it. Made that mistake once with Vista, "Once bitten, twice shy." Did do a download of Windows 7 and for the most part it seems to be Vista repackaged. It runs faster, but so does Vista if you turn off all the stuff that makes it Vista.

Will convert to Win 7 slowly as we replace computers. Still operating XP and have no intentions of trying Vista.

As we replace computers we will go with Win 7. Vista was never a consideration when it came out although we have a couple of Vista users that say it is better now that they are more familiar with it.

I will never upgrade to Windows 7, Vista really hurt me bad. I spent 7 times the cost in hardware replacement for upgrading to Vista. That is it for me. I will never upgrade another Windows OS again. If I need to buy hardware then I might as well just by an Apple, which I did. Feels good to have options, gives you hope...

so you complain about hardware cost, so you buy a computer that on average cost twice that of a windows computer, for the same, but with poorer quality parts, that requires you to buy a whole new model everytime you want to upgrade?

fyi, macs are made using foxconn parts, and foxconn is poor quality pc parts

Agree with above. Will switch from XP once Windows 7 gets to SP1...

Vista definitely not as bad as Multiple Errors edition; but not something I chose to deal with day to day.

I may indeed upgrade to Windows 7, but I want to share an experience with others. I tried to upgrade to Vista from Windows XP without upgrading my computer hardware and was very dissattisified. I found it buggy, poor in driver support, and slower. It's first iteration before SP1 was fairly disappointing.

Later I upgraded my computer to a dual-core computer and upgraded all of my hardware such that I pretty much get 5.9's on all of vista's performance rating system. I have all 5.9's except cpu where I have a 5.5. Now I wouldn't go back to XP. It seems this operating system really needs 2 cores and I couldn't be happier now. There are a couple of design features that Microsoft chose that makes Vista better, but harder to transistion to. The driver design at the low levels allows for Vista to better mutlitask and control hardware and prevent crashes by getting "containing" the drivers and not allowing them to have too much control. This design change caused fits because vendors had to rewrite drivers for Vista, which also was a learning curve, so they often were not better. As time has gone on, Vista has matured (SP2 is almost out) and driver support is excellent. I'm running the 64-bit version with 4GB of RAM with 2 monitors and am more productive than ever. I know because I am using the exact same setup with Vista as I was with XP before (When I bought my new hardwae I ran XP on it for 3 months before starting over with Vista). Vista is smoother, better looking, and you can feel the arhitectural changes at the low level has enhanced this OS. One other thing I recommend doing, is disabling UAC (User Access Control). Of course you are assuming the same risks as you had on XP where you could have malicous software take control of your computer, but just keep Antivirus up-to-date,let windows updates take care of your patching, use a hardware firewall, and don't surf off of well known websites (oh and use Google's Chrome web browser - it's more secure and more obscure, so less chance of a hack) If you do these things you will realize Vista has a lot to offer.

Another thing folks don't understand is Windows 7 is based on the underlying architecture of Windows Vista with a freshened interface. The most significant thing I know that is attractive for Windows 7 is that they are trimming the code base to make Windows 7 leaner and thus more efficient.

With an estimated cost of $300 plus to switch back to XP from Vista, I decided to just gut it out. I added 3 gb of RAM to my HP and got it running.

Installed Office Pro 2007 and went through several weeks of crashes with Outlook before they finally patched something.

Office Pro 2007 is a whole new software program, not just a few enhancements. Plan to spend some long hours relearning the program interface.

Changing to Windows 7 on top of Office Pro 2007 should provide endless hours of entertainment.

The cost to business should be huge.

I am running Vista right now with less problems with XP and love the new improvements of WPF and WCF and Aero. I am runnnig the Windows 7 pre-beta in in a Virtual PC and it works great so far. I hear a lot of complaints but I heard the same ignorant carping when NT came out and later when people had to switch to Win95 from DOS/Win3.1 then from Win05 to Win2k. Then the same stuff when changing from Windows 2000 to Windows XP. Now its XP to Vista. SSDD. People don't like change just look how we can't get off QWERTY keyboards even though they purposely designed to make typing harder and slower. All this love for XP and the reality is that it was just a update release to Win2k that incorporated the features that didn't make it into Win2k. Win7 is just the same thing, getting the things that were supposed to be in Vista but didn't make the release schedule. We will be having this same argument when Win8 comes out. SSDD

Most likely I will eventually make the switch to Windows 7, but not anytime soon.  Microsoft has a long and troubled history of rushing products to market that aren't quite ready for prime time, and then issuing service packs to address bugs.  Sorry, but I am not going to shell out money for the privilege of being a beta tester for Bill Gates.  If Bill wants to pay *me* for that service, then maybe we can talk ... ;)

there is a sucker born every minute

WHy move to W7 when XP Prof is doing well.

MS will blackmail the people into moving to W7.

I actually use Redhat Linux Fedora 9!

True. Windows 7 offers absolutely ZERO technical advantages over XP. Its just a different skin, more polish, more eye candy, more code bloat. They needed to redesign the kernel from the ground up and come up with a robust file system, and then we can talk. (well actually we can't talk -- Im so done with microsoft) Between tha sub-standard products and nazi licensing practices I'm just plain fed up. I run an IT shop with 550 Sun servers (Solaris 9/10) which run the meat and potatos of our company and a handfull of windows servers to support cheesey back office apps like espense reporting and timesheet applications. The overhead and maintenance costs of our small 50 server windows farm is about the same as our sun/cisco/brocade/emc/netapp gear. The downtime of our windows farm is far more than the unix side of the house. Much much more.

Honestly the future for microsoft doesn't look good. Apple is beating the pants off them.

Vista since SP1 and loving it. No problems, more stable and faster. Will also move to 7 when it reaches SP1. Can't wait. Don't really understand all this living in the past. Can't believe all the FUD that people continue to believe in.

NO I switched to Apple and never going back. Apple's operating system is simply the best and the support network is absolutely fantastic with their incredible expertise and the willingness and patience to solve any problem and make sure every customer leaves the building understanding the problem and knowing how it was fixed. Two genius representatives spent 3 hours assisting me in correcting an overloaded hard drive without ever revealing even an scintilla of annoyance or impatience. They were totally professional and seem genuinely happy to be working there. What you get for the increase cost of an apple computer is a system that works and one you can have total confidence in. Apples don't crash and their are not endless re-booting or patches every other week. I cannot believe I waited this long to switch. Microsoft is old school-the past. It is simply an inferior system without any creativity. They are out of gas trying to imitate Apple. Apple is already working on the next future computer and every other kind of gizmo that works better than everyone elses. I now understand the incredible creativity that is inherent in their culture. They do what works better than anyone. no comparison.

Not right away, they need to proove themselves first. It took me months to get my production back to normal after that Vista fiasco. I like the idea of the touch screen, but all the other garbage Microsoft adds slows down the computers so bad that it would cost much, much more for system upgrades than the os is worth.
